The Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work might appear closer to an arduous university quiz than the latest popular music project from a musician whose last single featured an international K-pop icon. Broken into 4 distinct sections and performed in 13 tongues, we have a dizzying symphonic work investigating female mystery, spiritual ascent, and physical change, often by way of the perspective of different female saints. The end of a romance—a theme treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer within an extensive roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition by itself makes the work of other pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to blend the past and the present, the scale feel far greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's breaking your heart in two, you still want to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during the stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically over-the-top orchestral crescendo thuds in like cartoonish impact. The song immediately shifts into the wild track driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—or even want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost every song ends in a completely distinct point from how it began. A track explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts off dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth the song's rough corners.

The Balance Of Experiment and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album is straddling the gap of bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has become her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track performed primarily in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging melodies as it spirals upward. This feat gets echoed on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural honesty of other breakup anthems, eviscerating a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, perhaps intoxicated on holy wine, flit from discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's most restlessly inventive practitioner.
